What’s New in the 2016 Passat?
The refresh for the 2016 Passat includes a significant exterior update and big changes to the car’s multimedia system. While the exterior changes appear subtle, only the roof, doors and body side are carryovers from the 2015 model. Everything else – hood, grille, front fenders, front and rear bumpers, trunklid, rims – has been updated. Edges that were once round have been squared off and chiseled by the car’s designers, and the sedan’s body and underside have been made more aerodynamically fit. The hood, in particular, stands out with its sculpted lines. The Passat was already a handsome, if understated, car. This new iteration has more presence, and now looks more upscale and elegant for less money.
The biggest change, however, is found inside with the addition of Volkswagen’s new second-gen MIB II infotainment system, a major upgrade from the old RNS 510 system. Standard on all five trimlines (Trendline, Trendline+, Comfortline, Highline and Execline) is a 6.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display that allows for swiping and pinch-zooming, a USB port, and the much-heralded App-Connect feature. This technology allows integration with three major smartphone platforms – Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink. Connecting your iPhone with Apple CarPlay, for instance, mirrors your phone’s interface onto the car’s 6.3-inch screen, allowing you to open the iPhone’s map app, play music or activate Siri, all without fiddling with your smartphone. It’s definitely a helpful feature that cuts down on distractions by projecting a familiar environment (your phone) onto the car’s screen. And it’s really a cinch to use. Simply hook up your phone with the provided USB cable and the car instantly recognizes it and does the rest (granted, only if your phone is an iPhone or Android). If you’d still prefer your car to come with built-in navigation, the Highline and Execline come with it standard, and it’s an available option in the Comfortline.
In contrast, things haven’t changed as much under the Passat’s sculpted new hood. Standard on all but the top-end Execline trim is Volkswagen’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder TSI engine. The turbocharged, direct-injection engine makes 170 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The more powerful 3.6-litre VR6 engine, which makes 280 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, is, sadly, only available on the fully-loaded Execline trim.
Also available for the first time in the Passat is an R Line package that spices things up considerably with the addition of unique rocker panels, a stylized front bumper with contrasting black accents, LED headlights and taillights (which are also available in the Execline trim), paddle shifters, a modified rear diffuser, sport seats and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
